Salt Air and Ranch Sliders: Caring for a Coastal Door
Near the Hauraki Gulf, the Manukau Harbour or the beaches, salt air corrodes rollers and pits the track. How to slow it down, and when a coastal slider needs repairing.

Auckland is never far from the sea, and salt air is hard on ranch sliders. It corrodes the rollers and pits the track, and beach sand makes it worse. You can slow it down; you can't stop it.
What salt does to a ranch slider
Whether you look over the Hauraki Gulf or the Manukau Harbour, salt carries on the wind. Sand adds to it: it comes in on feet and towels, settles in the track, and the rollers grind it into the rail.
Corrosion, close up
- A healthy roller is round and spins freely
- on a smooth, clean rail
- A corroded roller roughens, goes flat or seizes on its bearing
- and a pitted, sandy rail makes it bump and drag
Slowing it down
Do
- Wipe the track and the bottom of the frame with fresh water now and then
- Dry the track afterwards
- Vacuum the sand out after a beach day
- Keep the track's drain holes clear
Don't
- Oil or grease the track — salt and sand stick to it
- Water-blast the track
- Ignore a slider that has started to bump
A simple routine for a coastal ranch slider
After a beach day
Vacuum the track
Two minutes, before the rollers grind the sand in.
Every month
Fresh-water wipe
Track and frame bottom, then dry them.
Each spring
Check the slide
Before summer on the deck: does it still move with a light push? Any bumping or catching?
When it bumps or drags
Get the rollers looked at
Before a worn roller wears the rail as well.
Good to know
When it's past cleaning
Once the rollers have corroded or the rail is pitted, cleaning won't bring them back. The fix is new precision-fit rollers and a restored track — we're an authorised installer of the Miracle Stainless Steel Cover Track System.
It's still a repair, not a new door, as long as the frame is sound — and the slider has to glide with one finger afterwards, or the repair is free.
