Ranch Slider Care Through an Auckland Winter

Rain, wet leaves and condensation are hard on a ranch slider's track and rollers. A simple winter routine: drain holes, drying the track, and what to watch for.

An Auckland winter means rain, wet leaves and condensation on the glass — and much of it ends up in your ranch slider's bottom track. Keep the track clear and dry, and the drain holes open, and the rollers last longer.

What winter does to a track

Rain and condensation
Water sits in the track
Wet leaves and grit settle
Rollers grind through it
The slide gets heavier

Condensation runs down the inside of the glass on cold mornings and collects at the bottom. Outside, wind-driven rain carries leaves and grit into the track. Water that can't drain away keeps the rail and rollers damp.

Where water and dirt collect

The bottom track in cross-section: a raised rail, channels either side holding dirt, and a drain hole1234
  1. The raised rail the rollers run on — keep it clean and dry
  2. The channels either side, where rain, wet leaves and grit collect
  3. Drain holes, if your track has them — when they block, water sits in the track
  4. Grit on the rail is what grinds rollers down

A winter routine

  1. Cold mornings

    Wipe the condensation

A cloth along the bottom of the glass and the inside of the track.

  2. After heavy rain

Sweep out leaves, dry the track

Before wet grit dries onto the rail.

  3. Every month

Vacuum and clear the drain holes

So the next downpour can get out again.

  4. End of winter

    Slide it and listen

Any bumping, rumbling or catching? That's the rollers or the rail.

Do

  • Keep the drain holes clear
  • Dry the track after rain and on damp mornings
  • Air the room — less condensation on the glass
  • Vacuum leaf litter out of the track

Don't

  • Oil or grease the track — wet grit sticks to it
  • Leave water sitting in the track
  • Force a slider that's become stiff over winter

Good to know

Damp and mould

Black spots on the seals or in the track corners are a sign of damp sitting there. Wipe them clean with warm, soapy water and dry the area — and keep the drain holes clear so it doesn't come back as quickly.

Tap to compare

Stiff after winter?

Likely: wet dirt dried onto the rail.

  • ✓Cleaning and drying often fixes it
  • ✗Long-term grit may already have worn the rollers

Best when: it got heavier slowly and the track looks dirty.
